What kind of work experience is needed for a successful medical student application?

Work experience is getting harder and harder to get in the ever changing rules and regulations of the NHS. School students are finding it increasingly difficult to gain any work experience whatsoever.

My advice to you is that with work experience, it is not about quantity, it is about Quality. You'll learn as soon as you get into medical school that everything you do is followed by self-relfection. Whether this is formally in the sense of building your portfolio, or casually in terms of focusing on an encounter and thinking what went well or what could be done better. Therefore when applying for work experience, don't worry too much about what kind it is as long as you have around a week in either a hospital or a GP surgery. Once you have secured this you will need to reflect on your experience further to show the interviewers what impact it had on you and what it has changed about your interpretation of the medical profession. At this point is is also nice to demonstrate a particular encounter that confirmed your aspirations to become a doctor!
