When considering research it is important to consider ethical guidelines. For example, informed consent should be taken from all participants by informing them of the role in which they will play in the study. Also, a full debrief should occur once the study is over detailing the role and results of the study. However, in social research the concept of deception is contentious. As with many social research projects, letting participants know the true purpose of the study may confound they results through demand characteristics. For example, in Milgram's study participants were told that the study was assessing the role of punishment on learning rather than conformity. It is important, however, to inform participants of the true purpose once the study is over. Social researchers can also receive guidelines from committees such as the BPS and APA who will be the committees approving or disapproving such studies.
