  1. UT can either be followed by an indicative or subjunctive verb 2. UT + subjunctive: a) purpose clause (negated by replacing ut with ne) b) result clause (negated by ut + non) and signalled by a signpost word beforehand (e.g. tam, tot, sic, ita) c) indirect command (negated by replacing ut with ne) - introduced by a verb of command: impero, rogo d) fearing clause: ut used to express fear something won't happen; ne used to express fear something will happen; introduced by verb of fearing; e.g. timeo, vereor 3. UT + indicative a) to express how, as, when
