What purpose should an introduction serve?

It is necessary to give an overview of your argument. It should be possible to copy and paste this introduction into the position of the conclusion. The aim of the essay is not to take the examiner on a roller coaster of ideas, but instead to colour in the outline or shell of an argument you have already stated in your introduction. I would highly recommend using a quotation from the text also.
