How does the preceding direct object pronoun affect past participles in the following clause

The past participle agrees with the number and gender of the PDO with nothing added for masculine singular words, -e for feminine singular words, -s for masculine plural and -es for feminine plural E.g. Le mot que j'ai lu and les lettres que j'ai lues

"je les ai achetés" why does the past participle "achetés" have an "s" at the end when it is an "avoir" verb? I was taught that only verbs that use "être" as their auxiliary add endings to the past participle?
