How should I structure a 20 mark essay?

You should start with an introduction. The main aim of the introduction is to put the essay question into context, so that the examiner knows you are aware of the time period. However, even at this stage you should be presenting your line of argument- using words from the question can help you do this. The main body of the argument should follow a Point, Evidence and Explain pattern. You should make a point, back it up with evidence, then explain what this evidence shows. For top marks you need to evaluate these points, but show that your argument is stronger. Finally, finish with a conclusion. This is where you summarise your argument without adding any new points, and give a final answer.
