There is an acronym I have been using since my GCSE's for this. C.F.J. Context, factors and judgment or Can Fatties Jump (though perhaps it could be modified to be more PC). However, in this form it has the advantage of humour, making it easier remember under pressure. The introduction is the first thing an examiner will read and therefore it is crucial to start strong so as to make a good impression and hopefully make them consider you favourably from the outset.
Whilst making a judgment at the beginning of the essay could be seen as premature it gives direction to your writing and will make your argument more focused as you have committed to paper how it will end. It can also act as a plan as you lay out factors that lead you to the conclusion, ensuring that you know how the order in which essay is going to pan out. Moreover, if you run out of time it can be a useful pointer for examiners as to what direction your essay was headed and how it was designed to end; potentially gleaning extra marks. Though perhaps the most important aspect of this strategy is that it gives you a burst of confidence at the start of the essay, an effect that will improve your work ten fold. Whilst this can be hard to imagine you may surprise yourself in the exam.
