A codified constitution is a fundamental element to have for a democracy. Discuss

To a certain extent, yes it is required as it will promote certainty and clarity when people are determining their rights (assuming Human Rights are included), as well as outlining the basic principles and functions of the government. This is essential to ensure the executive does not abuse their powers and holds them to account, as well as protecting citizens from the state.

However, key issues with written constitutions is that the rigidity can be a draw back. Flexibility is often regarded, in the UK, as an important aspect as it lets the constitution evolve with current events. In the USA for example, gun control is in dire need of reform, however, the fact that it is written in the constitution makes it nearly impossible for any government to advance on restricting availability of weapons. Additionally, it transfers a large amount of power to the courts for interpretation, with the ability for a Supreme Court to strike down legislation, causing deadlock in government.
