There are many components of fitness which would benefit an individual's performance in a 100m sprint race, however, the two which I will focus on are explosive power, and flexibility.
Explosive power will prove extremely beneficial, especially to an athlete in which a race can last as little as 10 seconds. Getting a good start to a race could prove pivotal to a sprinter's performance. Explosive power will enable an athlete to generate more speed from a standing position than their foes. This can be improved by employing resistance training within a gym. Possibly using a squatting exercise, having athletes squat 80% of their maximum weight for low repetitions, really focusing on an explosive push out of the lower segment of the squatting position.
Flexibility would also prove extremely beneficial to a 100m sprint athlete. Flexibility would allow a greater stride length whilst sprinting which means the athlete will have less physical work to do as they may cover more ground using fewer strides than their foes. Flexibility can be improved using stretching exercises, or by employing yoga exercises into one's training program.
