The Guerilla tactics of the Vietcong had an enormous impact on both American military effectiveness and morale. Traversing the jungle on bicycles or on foot, the Vietcong were far more mobile and agile than cumbersome American jeeps and tanks, meaning that they were quickly able to outflank and surround their enemy. Their use of booby traps such as the punji snake trap had an enormous impact on American morale, with many troops being forced to watch their comrades slowly dying. The traps and possibility of ambust generated a state of constant tension and fear which weakened the ability of the American soldiers to perform simple tasks, and led to many developing severe PTSD as veterans.
