Charlie goes to the shop and buys six cookies, three ice creams, and four chocolates. Cookies cost 60p, Ice creams cost £1.70 and chocolates cost 65p. How much does Charlie spend?

To find out how much Charlie spends in total, you have to figure out how much he spends on each type of thing, and then add them together. To find how much he spends on each kind of thing, you have to multiply the number of things by the price of each one.

In this case, six cookies = 6 times 60p = £3.60. Three ice creams = 3 times £1.70 = £5.10. Four chocolates = 4 times 65p = £2.60  So in total he spends £3.60 + £5.10 + £2.60 = £11.30
