Describe how crude oil is separated by fractional distillation.

Crude oil is composed of hydrocarbons of different lengths. In a fractional distillation chamber, the crude oil is heated and cooled to different temperatures. The shorter chain hydrocarbons will boil at a lower temperature than the longer chain hydrocarbons, allowing the crude oil to be separated into fractions depending on the temperature inside the chamber.
