Choose one scene from the live theatrical performance you saw. With reference to 3 specific moments in the performance of this scene, analyse how effective the acting in this scene was in creating mood and/or tension.

Begin with a short introduction in which you state the significance of the scene within the context of the play. It is important not to look at the scene in isolation. Excellent answers would include references to previous performances as well as the social and historical context of the production, which should be integrated throughout the answer. From this, establish the most desirable interpretation of the scene in terms of mood and/or tension based on deductions made from the context of the play’s construction.

Each paragraph of the answer should focus on one specific moment of action within the scene. The techniques you should evaluate include vocal delivery (tempo, pitch and intonation), Non-verbal communication (facial expression, body tension/posture, movement) and characterisation. It is important to make constant reference to the effect of these techniques on the audience and compare this with the intended interpretation. To finish the essay, a short conclusion on the effectiveness of the scene should be added, and should refer back to the introduction but should not add any new points not included earlier in the answer.
