What makes a good essay introduction?

A strong introduction is vital for any good essay, as it lends structure to both the reader but also yourself. In order to write a convincing essay you need to outline your points clearly and briefly in the introduction, so that you make sure all your points flow together and, most importantly, answer the question. Brevity is crucial - you don't want to go overboard with detail, but just outline what you will be discussing later on in the essay. Another good tip is to explain (in the introduction) any terms that might be open to interpretation or varied definitions, so that the reader/examiner understands the way in which you are interpreting the question (e.g. with thematic questions, explain how you interpret the word "jealousy".)
