How should I structure a commentary?

Begin with an introduction that demonstrates that you grasp the text's literal meaning within a succinct thesis statement. The thesis statement should contain the key ideas you intend to discuss in your commentary, including the literary devices used. A well written thesis statement can help structure the body of your commentary, which ought to be based around the ideas that the author attempts to explore. Your conclusion is not merely a summary, but a chance to add finesse on an essay which expounds a particular thesis statement by explaining how all the ideas in your commentary link to the aforementioned statement.

PETAL (Point, Evidence, Technique, Analysis and Link to thesis statement) is a great way to structure paragraphs whilst demonstrating key attributes rewarded in the rubric, such as organization and appreciation of literary devices.
