Describe what is meant by the following musical textures: 1) homophonic, 2) polyphonic, 3) call and response.

  1. Homophonic texture is when the music sounds 'as one', such as block chords, where all instruments change notes at the same time.

  2. Polyphonic means 'many sounds'. The instruments playing may all have different melodies that overlap and weave together to create the music.

  3. Call and Response music is exactly that, a 'call' tune (often a solo) is followed by a 'response' tune (often a group of instruments).
