To what extent is wind power a suitable form of energy generation for the UK today?

A pretty simple pros and cons question - signalled by the terms 'to what extent'. Yes, it is an suitable form of energy for today because: It fits the bill for today's sustainability drive - no fossil fuels are required to be burned = less carbon in the atmospherre = reduced impact on global warming. As an island, the UK's coastline is a good source for wind. Not only is there a good supply of wind, but the coastline provides opportunities for offshore wind farms, rather than onshore. This preserves space on land and is more desirable for people who are often anti- wind turbines due to NIMBY-ism. However... Not all can be built offshore. Problems with a variety of stakeholders who object to the appearance and noise from wind farms. Problems with reliability - cannot rely on wind the same way you can on fossil fuels or nuclear power. Also, expensive technology in comparison to power stations. Not yet affordable as a keycomponent of energy mix.
