A school has 1200 pupils. 575 of these pupils are girls. 2/5 of the girls like sports. 3/5 of the boys like sport. Work out the total number of pupils in the school who like sport.

As we are told the number of girls that are in the school, our first step should be to calculate the number of boys in the school through a simple subtraction (1200-575 = 625). After this we are told that 2/5 of the girls like sport and 3/5 of the boys like sport. In order to find how many people in school like sport we should multiply the number of girls in school (575) by the percentage of them who like sport (2/5) and obtain the number of girls that like sport (230). Then do the same for the boys (625 x 3/5) and obtain the number of boys that like sport (375). By adding the two together we obtain the total number of pupils that like sport in the school (375+230 = 605)
