Through the two protagonists, Michael and Hanna, Schlink portrays the conflict between the WWII generation and the post-war generation in Germany as one that can never be understood by one another. Indeed, both of the charachters symbolise one particular generation in 20th century Germany: Hanna representing the WWII generation, and Michael the post-war generation. Throughout the novel, their arguments, judgements and misunderstandings all contribute to emphasize how the two generations struggle to find a common ground in light of the horrors committed in the 3rd Reich.
