Research into the cognitive approach is largely based upon computor models, which uses computor terminology to describe human cognition, for example 'input' would represent sensory information from our environment. This may confuse human cognition with computors, which is not helpful, since computors are different from humans, for example, humans make mistakes daily. Also, research is artificial, due to being held in labs. This reduces ecological validity, due to the high control conditions, so we cannot determine cause and effect relationships. However, research has led to successful treatments in cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) for depression and OCD, which is effective in allowing people to have a better quality of life.
