What are the effect of poetic terms?

Learning objective: to understand and identify the effect of poetic terms. To begin with, I would ask the student to define a: simile; alliteration; and personification (or whichever terms they are finding difficult). Then I would compare my answer and examples with theirs (this exercise would enable me to gauge the student's basic knowledge). Next, to enable the student to apply their knowledge, I would provide them with a short poem that is full of interesting poetic examples and ask them to tell me what the poem is about and why. This would enable them to begin to form their own opinion on pieces of literature, which is a helpful task when they are undertaking analytical exercises/questions in exams. In the poem, I would then ask the student to highlight any examples of the poetic terms previously mentioned. Moreover, to solidify the student's knowledge I would ask them to finish particular sentences about each of the terms. For example: if an eagle is described as a thunderbolt, what does this suggest? As a closing exercise I would ask the student to write a short poem that follows the same rules to apply and further consolidate their knowledge.
