How do I make my personal statement sound good without being too cliché?

Let's start with the basics: why do you want to study this subject and what do you already know about it? Don't worry about the language just yet, it's the ideas which are the most important- if you know exactly what you want to say, you will be able to express yourself more clearly and concisely. Your interest in the subject will come across when you discuss it so you don't have to state at the beginning how much you love the sound of the course. If there is something in particular which you have a strong opinion on, don't ba afraid to include it! The admissions tutors will admire your confidence and independent opinion as long as you can back it up and explain yourself which is something they really look for in a potential student. Last of all, think about any extra-currricular activities you have done which might be relevant to your application and why they have influenced your choice of university course. Once we've got all of these ideas, we can tweak the language so that it sounds sophisticated but not too cliché.
