What is the conservation of energy?

Energy comes in many forms (e.g. chemical, potential, kinetic). We say that energy is transferred when it changes from one form to another. The conservation of energy means that in a closed system the amount of energy does not increase or decrease during the transfer, it only changes from one state to another. However, sometimes energy is not changed into the useful form we want and is wasted by turning into other forms.
