A student reacts calcium carbonate with hydrochloric acid. Design an experiement that would allow the student to determine the rate of reaction. Draw the set up.

The reaction between calcium carbonate and hydrochloric acid produces carbon dioxide.  The carbon dioxide could be collected in a gas syringe or in a measuring tube inverted and filled with water.  The rate of gas evolution could be measured over a certain time interval.  The set up should be drawn by the tutee as described.  The rate of reaction could be calculated as the volume of evolved gas divided by the time interval.
