How should I structure a long answer question in my exam?

It is very important that the structure of your essay is clear and coherent, whilst at the same time showing your knowledege and understanding of the topic at hand. Introcuction:  Examine the question and briefly define the key terms of the question within the historical context they are being asked Do not answer the question in the introduction, save that for the conclusion Main Body - For argument: Make a point in support of the statement put forward by the question Use evidence from your own knowledge to back up this point Explain and analyse why this supports the statement put forward in the question (Repeat as necessary) Main Body - Counter argument: Make a point which counters the statement put forward in the question (introduce this point with a contrary statement such as 'That being said...' or 'On the other hand...' Use evidence from your own knowledge to back up this point Explain and analyse why this counters the statement put forward in the question Conclusion Answer the question at hand Do this by summarising what you have said previously but by weighing it up try and put yourself on one side or the other - either for or against Also try and add in something new - maybe an unused piece of evidence which may have swung you one way or the other.
