Work out area of shaded region in terms of pi. (https://prnt.sc/hqfbsl) [Question link]

Area of square : Base x Height.

Area of Circle: π x (Radius)2.

Looking at the diagram we are given the dimensions of the base or height of the cube (as all sides are equal in a square) and the diameter of the circle.

To answer this question we must work out the area of both shapes in the diagram.

Area of Square = Base x Height  = 10 cm x 10 cm                                                                       [note: cm x cm = cm2]

=100 cm2

Area of circle = π x radius2  or  /4) x Diameter2

Diameter = 10 cm Therefore Radius = 5 cm

= π x 52 = π x (5x5) = 25π cm

In the diagram it is shown that the circle is within the area of the square therefore to get the area of the shaded region of the square we subtract the area of the circle that is covering the non shaded region of the square from the area of the square so in terms of pi we get...

100 -  25π = Area of shaded region.
