What is the difference between mitosis and meiosis?

Mitosis is the production of two genetically identical diploid daughter cells in one division while meiosis is the formation of four genetically different haploid daughter cells in two divisions. Mitosis occurs in body cells and produces cells with a full number of chromosomes while meiosis occurs only in sex organs and produces cells with half the number of chromosomes. Meiosis also produces gametes and results in genetic variation for sexual reproduction.
