What is the diRfference between Oxidation and Reduction?

An easy way to remember the difference between Oxidation and Reduction is OIL RIG:

Oxidation

Is

Loss (of electrons)

Reduction

Is

Gain (of electrons)

Oxidation involves the gain of electrons (or oxygen) and reduction involves the loss of electrons (or oxygen).
