It is common to force a connection between an analysis of literature and a contextual point. When thinking about context, you need to ask yourself several questions: from the context that I know, what contemporary issue is the writer alluding to? How would the writer’s contemporary audience have felt about this issue? What relevance is this to the events in the text? Through the portrayal/allusion to this issue, what message is the writer suggesting? Thinking about these questions helps you deconstruct context as a far more approachable aspect of your analysis.
