Explain what is meant by the mass defect of an atomic nucleui

Correct answer: the positive difference between the separated and combined mass of the nucleons. 

Explaination: The nculeons are held together by a binding force- ie the strong force, intermedicated by the exchange of pi quarks, who's formation reduces the energy and mass of the individual nucleons.
