What is differentiation used for?

Differentiation is used to find the gradient of a line, or curve. It can also be used to find the co-ordinates of stationary points, whether these be minimum, maximum or points of inflection. The second derivitive can be used to identify if these points are minimum or maximum.

The equation of a curve is y = x^2 - 5x. Work out dy/dx


A particle is moving in a straight line from A to B with constant acceleration 4m/s^2. The velocity of the particle at A is 3m/s in the direction AB. The velocity of the particle at B is 18m/s in the same direction/ Find the distance from A to B.


y = (x+4)(6x-7). By differentiating, find the x coordinate of the maximum of this equation.
