How do you effectively evaluate theories/models in an essay?

Evaluating theories and models can be quite difficult, especially understanding where it start. One method that I like to use is called TEACUP. This helps ensure that you cover the most important elements of evaluation for a theory or model. I will break down the meaning of it below:

T - testable: is the theory tested effectively? Can it be tested easily in a research study? What might be some issues with this?

E - empirical evidence: what kind of evidence is there supporting the model or theory? What does the evidence show?

A - applicable: Can it be applied to everyday life? Does it explain human behaviour? What scenarios can it be applied to?

C - construct: are the terms/concepts within the theory/model defined effectively? Are they observable or measurable? If not, what are issues with this?

U - unbiased: does the theory/model focus on a particular group of people?

P - predictable: does it explain behaviour? does it predict what it says it does?

This technique can be applied to various theories and models. Going through each point and asking yourself these questions creates your evaluation! It is best to pick out a few points from "TEACUP" based on which fit the model/theory to discuss.
