How do I divide fractions?

If you have a fraction divided by another fractions things can get tricky, but there is an easy way to avoid getting triple decker fractions! Have a look at this example: (1/2) / (2/5) = (1/2) x (5/2) = (5/4) Can you see what we have done here? We have flipped the fraction we are dividing by, and change the divide sign to a multiply. Then, we just multiply the numerators (numbers on the top) and the denominators (numbers on the bottom). Lets try some more examples.

Claire drove from Manchester to London, it took her 4 hours at an average speed of 85 km/h. Matt drove from Manchester to London, it took him 5 hours. Assuming he took the same route as Claire and took no breaks, work out his average speed in km/h.

The equation of the line L1 is y = 3x – 2. The equation of the line L2 is 3y – 9x + 5 = 0. Show that these two lines are parallel.

Expand 2(x - 10)^2

Solve the two simultaneous equations: 2y + x = 8 [A] and 1 + y = 2x [B]
