What is ionic bonding? Give an example

A bond formed between a metal atom and a non-metal atom in which electrons are transferred from the metal atom to the non-metal atom, forming ions. If an atom loses an electron, it becomes positively charged and if an atom gains an electron, it becomes negatively charged. E.g. NaCl consists of Na+ and Cl- since the sodium atom donates an electron to the chlorine atom
