Why should I think about alternative meanings when analysing a word/phrase?

Being able to think about an alternative meaning for a particular word or phrase when analysing a text is a skill that will allow for a student to reach a higher band, as it displays perceptive thinking and the ability to dissect and unpack a word or phrase, looking at its deeper meaning.
