How to write a good English literature essay.

 

1- Read the question over and over again and underline the keywords until you fully understand it. 

2Write a brief plan which will help you organize and structure your essay. 

3 -A good essay structure includes 

Introduction – A good introduction briefly summaries your whole answer. Include a brief summary of the main aspects of the text, a brief summary of the points that you are going to make and sometimes include a little bit of general context about the author or text. Remember not to waffle; the introduction must be concise and confident. 

Main Paragraphs – 3/4 main paragraphs are enough; each one should introduce a relevant, clear and new point. These paragraphs should develop the essays argument. Each time you make a new point, you must provide evidence such as quote from the text to back it up. Each time you use a quote you must comment on any literary techniques used such as similes or metaphors. After you have analysed the quote, you must explain what this evidence shows. This is easier to remember as, PEE Point Evidence Explain. 

Conclusion – Restate the opening argument that was mentioned in the introduction. This shows that the essay is well structured and coherent. List briefly the major points of the essay. Finish with a summary statement. Don't add any new points or pieces of information here, the conclusion is just about finishing the argument that you have already created.  

4 - Always refer back to the question when writing an essay to make sure that you are answering the question. 

5 - Checking it is very important to check your work after you have written it. Read it all the way through as many times as you can, checking for errors and spelling mistakes. Look back at the points you have made and make sure you have backed them up with evidence. 

 

- A good essay has a clear and coherent structure. 

- It shows good knowledge and understanding of the text 

- It uses quotations to back up its points. 

- It analyses literary techniques, styles or forms 

- The language writing style is formal yet there is no waffling 

- As simple as it sounds, the most important thing to remember is that a good essay, answers the question.
