How and when to use Si clauses

There are three main si clauses: 1. Most likely - Present + future Si je fais mon devoir, mon prof m’aimera 2. Unlikely - Imperfect + conditional Si je faisais mon devoir, mon prof m’aimerais 3. Impossible - pluperfect + conditional perfect Si j’avais fait mon devoir, mon prof m’aurait aimé

I do not understand why some words in French start with "le" "la" "une" or "un". Why isn't it just "the" or "a"?
