How do I get started with my project?

Being faced with a blank canvas was one of the most challenging thing for me. What should I do? What artists should I research? What themes and ideas am I going to cover? We often spend a lot of time in the art studio procrastinating because we still don’t have that brilliant final piece idea. The truth is that the most amazing portfolios, and the ones that often get the best grades, are the ones that show development and progression of ideas. Thus, it is crucial that we stop overthinking things and instead start looking at artists for inspiration. Perhaps analyse styles of art that you like and experiment with those. Go out for a photoshoot. Look through Pinterest but most importantly visit art exhibitions. I was very lucky in that I went to a Sixth Form in a walking distance to all the major art galleries in London. However, even if this is not possible there are numerous resources online such as the Tate website which give you insightful information regarding artists. My point is that to get started with any art project you need research through mind maps or analyses of artists, whatever works for you. Then, after having done some research, pick what you like the most and start experimenting with it. You will soon find your preferences and start coming up with a brief idea. Try not to wonder around and when the time is right, stick to something specific such as life and death and start experimenting with that one idea.
