It's frustrating isn't it. You have done all the research, you remember all the dates and key points and you know all the answers. But you just have no idea how to structure your thoughts to make a coherent answer. Well look no further. Every good essay is broken down into three parts - Introduction, Body, and Conclusion. Introduction - short and sweet and to the point. You need to do three things; Introduce the subject and essay question. Begin by briefly discussing its relevance, timeliness, and/or importance. Some background to the essay can be given here.State your argument - the answer to the EXACT essay question you are asked. It should be done in ONE SENTENCE. Example: “In this essay, I will argue that…”Discuss very briefly how you will answer the question in the rest of the essay Body – this is the meat of your essay. This is where you get to expand on the points you said you are going to discuss in the introduction and talk about an counterarguments to the points you want to make. You must remember to PEEL. Point – state your argument here. What point are you making, making sure it directly answer the question Evidence – what historical fact backs up your point??? State that here Evaluation – evaluate that evidence. Why is this evidence important or strong? Use words like, this is a strong argument because… Link – extremely important! You need to link the point back to the question. Use words such; As such, in this way; therefore etc. You’re nearly there, you have evaluated all your points and written your introduction. Last but certainly not least is the conclusion. Now remember your examiner has read sooo many essays by this point. They are probably tired, your conclusion is your chance to shine even more. Conclusion - Summarise your arguments simply, clearly and briefly. (Tell me how you have proven/ demonstrated your argument.) Connect your answer to the essay question and discuss the answer’s significance. Do NOT bring any new points or arguments.
