Environmental sustainabilty involves improvements in the basic standard of living that do not cause long-term damage to the environment that has the potential to impact future generations. Environmental sustainabiltiy could include aspects such as: protecting biodiversity, the management of natural resources (e.g. water, land, fisheries), reducing pollution (air, water, noise, waste etc.), reducing carbon emissions and stopping human-caused climate change.
A possible management strategy could be ecotourism. For example, the creation of protected areas such as a national park aims to protect the biodiversity of the region, and mangage the natural resources by ensuring that there is minimal to no resource extraction by corporations or locals. These protected areas may then enable a source of income through tourism which has the ability to utilise the local knoweldge of indigenous peoples whilst also providing an alternative livelihood.
