How do you answer a source based question?

(Assuming you are completing an A-level source question like the one in Edexcel papers)

First of all, read the sources very carefully. When reading them, use 3 different coloured highlighters for each of the three sources. This will visually separate the information you are reading. Secondly, annotate around the sources in pen as you go, linking any corroborating/ opposing sentences with a simple line or arrow between the sources. Thirdly, DO NOT panic when you come across something you do not know. Only write about bits of the source you understand, as if you try and tackle bits you don't, this will leave holes in your argument, making it less convincing and ultimately weakning it. Fourthly, try and group together parts of each source you have identified as corroborating or opposing, using numbers 1, 2 and 3 for example, as this will help you formulate your 3 paragrahs of your essay. Finally, use the information in the source as the basis and leading point of your argument, and back it up with your own contextual knowledge of the topic.
