Stages when confronted with this question: 1. Read both poems multiple times (at least 3 times each) 2. Use highlighters to higlight interesting imagery, syntax, diction, rhyme scheme, rhythm etc. 3. It is important to remember that you USE these literary devices to support your thesis statement rather than to lead the discussion 4. Look at particular themes and the way in which the poets address them (differences/similarities)- write a PLAN 5. Write your thesis statement in your introduction (this is what your essay will argue)- choose 3 different points that support this thesis statement 6. Use the literary devices to support each of your 3 paragraphs (depending on the time period/ length of the essay required) 7. Use your conclusion to tie up all the loose ends and make a general comment on the theme discussed
