Explain the formation of a waterfall

Where water is moving downwards due to the force of gravity this action is faster in the upper course of the river due to steep hills in the uplands where waterfalls are most common. If the underlying rock is soft rock underlain by ahrd rock, the soft rock erodes faster by the waters action and causes a plunge which the water follows.
