Can you explain the Human Genome Project?

DNA sequencing technology has made great advancements in the recent years and allowed us to sequence bits of DNA. In other words, we now have the technology to determine the sequence of lengths of DNA at a nucleotide base pair precision. The human genome project was an international scientific research project taken up in 1990 with the goal of sequencing the DNA that make up the entire human genome.  Human genome sequencing would open many doors including:  1. Finding out the stretches of DNA mutation that could be indicative of a particular genetic disease such as cancer or Alzheimer's 2. Advancement and creation of new gene therapies as understanding of the genome would allow us to gain insight into how certain genes could be manipulated and modified.  3. Genetic modification in an agricultural sense to increase crop yield and resistance to crop-related diseases.
