What impact did two leaders have on the Cold War?

In order to effectively answer this question, I would begin by stating which Cold War leaders my essay will focus on, perhaps Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev. I would choose two Cold War leaders who were politically active in a similar period, with both Gorbachev and Reagan being particularly active in the 1980's in order to make the argument flow more effectively. I would also choose two leaders from opposite ends of the issue in order to make the argument more clear cut. In my introduction, I would outline the impact that each respective leader had on the Cold War, such as Reagan's rejection of detentè and labelling of the Soviet Union as an 'evil empire' and Gorbachev's reform minded policies, such as 'glasnost' and 'perestroika'. I would conclude the introduction by mentioning the historiography that I would reference throughout the rest of the essay, in order to strengthen my argument and also fulfil the criteria that requires the use of historiography.

I would begin each paragraph of my main body with the argument that the paragraph will follow. I would perhaps adopt a chronological approach, by firstly addressing the issues that the respective leaders had at the beginning of their leadership and then track the development of their impact on the cold war and their approach to such issues throughout the essay, which thus adds to the organisation of the essay, which is an important criteria to meet. I would make sure to reference historiography in each paragraph in order to add context and and an academic opinion to my essay which strengthens my argument, and also meets the required criteria. I would also make sure that each of the paragraphs flows from the other, even when talking about the impact of different leaders, perhaps by talking about both leaders' approach to arms or foreign policy in consecutive paragraphs, for example. I would make sure to adopt an analyitical approach in each of my paragraphs, by carefully analysing the information included and coming to a reasoned conclusion to end each paragraph. I would follow this outline until I reach my conclusion, where I concisely draw up the arguments from each paragraph in my main body into a reasoned and final concluding sentence.
