How far do you agree that World War Two substantially changed the United States?

Breaking down an essay into smaller pieces can help to keep the argument clear and concise and ensures you are answering the question. Each essay can be based around the same basic frame work; an introduction, a series of 3 or 4 paragraphs followed by a conclusion. The introduction must highlight the points you will address and state the argument you will follow, by this I mean to directly answer the question. A good way to start may be by providing context to one of the terms, in this case perhaps acknowledging the scale of World War Two. Another way may be to deconstruct the question and define how you interpret one of the terms used in the question. For example explain that for the purposes of this essay what substantial change will mean. The main body of the essay should be formed of a series of paragraphs, usually 3 or 4 is substantial enough. When establishing the points you are going to use, there are a number of ways you could structure the essay, one way is to use the points of politics, economics and society and to examine the change and limitations within each paragraph. This would require more nuanced language and a clearer conclusion at the end of each paragraph in order to maintain a clear line of argument however, may be more of an advantage to those who prefer to think about ideas and historical events in a broader sense. Alternatively, you could construct paragraphs based around a agree/disagree formula, having 2 paragraphs that support your argument and 1 or 2 that disagree. The difficulty that can arise here is that you need to organise your paragraphs so that you always finish on the point that supports your conclusion and you need to be able to undermine the alternative arguments at the end of these paragraphs however, many students find this formula more straight forward. Example points for this essay could include; Yes – 1.World War Two boosted the US economy 2.World War Two changed the position of women in society No- 1. World War Two did not substantially change the position of Black Americans 2. World War Two did not substantially change the domestic political landscape. Within each paragraph a PEEL structure (P: Point E: Explanation E: Evidence L: Link) keeps the argument clear. Evidence within the paragraph should be in chronological order. With the link it can be useful to use the wording of the question to ensure you are not only linking to the next paragraph but also linking back to the question. The conclusion can often feel like one of the hardest sections to write, it’s important not to just repeat material from the main body or restate what your wrote in the introduction. In the conclusion you want to show that you’ve considered the evidence on both sides and after careful evaluation have come to your argument. While it may not suitable for an academic essay to use personal pronouns the language used here should be direct and straightforward. So for this essay a good sentence to include in the conclusion may follow the lines of ‘After considering (fill in with the points you have discussed) it appears clear that World War Two substantially impacted the United States.’
