Explain how the bodies endocrine system controls levels of blood glucose after eating a meal?

After consumption of a meal the levels of glucose in the blood rise. Receptors on beta cells detect this change. The beta cells are in the Islets of Langerhans of the pancreas. They secrete insulin in response to high levels of blood glucose. The insulin increases the rate of glucose transport into cells by facilitated diffusion. Insulin activates enzymes that convert glucose to glycogen for storage in the liver and skeletal muscle. Insulin also promotes the synthesis of fat to be stored in adipose tissue. This reduces the levels of glucose in the blood restoring homeostasis.
