how do I analyze a poem/passage?

I would recommend analyzing on three different levels

1. word

-emotive words

-double meaning? 

2. sentence

-tenses

-figurative language

-sentence structure

-style: informal/formal 

3. text

-are there any pictures? (there usually are) if so, what effects do the pictures create? 

-cohesion
