Identify and Define 3 terms that describe the texture of a piece of music.

Possible Answers:

  • Polyphonic/Contrapuntal = Multiple lines or voices. Polyphony is when musical lines weave in and out of each other. A popular example of this texture is in a Fugue.

  • Homophonic = Sounding together. Homophony occurs when multiple voices (perhaps in differnet instruments) move together in a chordal texture that highlights the harmony.

  • Unison = All voices/parts are playing the same line at the same time - no harmony added.

  • Monophonic = A single, unaccompanied line of music.

  • Antiphonal = Texture is split into 2 (or more parts) which sing/play alternate parts in the music.

  • Heterophonic = Simultaneous variation of a single melodic line.
