What should I write descriptive stories about?

The most important thing about decriptions is that you base them around something that you know intimately or that you can picture very clearly in your mind. It is always so much harder thinking of a new thing to describe than writing about a place or an object that you already know the details of! Therefore, before you start planning, choose carefully your item. If it is a place, maybe think of somewhere special that you have been to, or if it is an object, find something that means a lot to you. If it is something that you have an emotional connection to, then you are more likely to be able to paint an interesting and vivid picture for your reader. In addition to this, it is vital to remember that you can tailor these examples to different scenarios, even if what you say isn't entirely true! For example, if the question asks you to describe your favourite place abroad, you can still talk about a house or a landscape that's actually in the UK, just situate it elsewhere in the story! The examiner will not know what's true or not, they are simply interested in the quality of the writing that you can produce, which will be better if you are writing about somewhere that you know well. I would recommend that before you go into the exam, you have a bank of places, objects or people that you can describe and then tailor those descriptions to the requirements of the question. Using this method, you can ensure that you gain inspiration quickly, that your writing is of good quality and that you answer the question directly.
